Fluoride
Fluoride is an important mineral that helps keep your child’s teeth strong and resistant to cavities. It works by strengthening enamel and protecting teeth from acid attacks caused by bacteria.
Why Fluoride Matters
Fluoride helps:
Strengthen developing teeth
Protect against cavities
Repair early signs of tooth decay
Children benefit most when they receive fluoride regularly as their teeth grow and develop.
Types of Fluoride
Fluoride comes in two main forms, and both play a role in protecting your child’s smile:
Topical Fluoride (on the teeth):
Toothpaste
Mouth rinses
Fluoride treatments at the dental office
Helps strengthen teeth already in the mouth.
Systemic Fluoride (ingested):
Drinking water
Fluoride supplements (drops or tablets)
Helps strengthen teeth as they develop.

Do Children Need Fluoride Supplements?
Whether your child needs fluoride supplements depends on:
The fluoride level in your local water
Your child’s age
Their risk for cavities
Most cities in our area, including El Cerrito and neighboring East Bay communities, have fluoridated water. Because of this, many children do not need additional fluoride supplements.
Important Tips
Do not use fluoride supplements if your child already drinks fluoridated water
Avoid giving fluoride supplements with milk or calcium-rich foods, as this can reduce absorption
Always follow the recommended dosage for your child’s age
