PRR -Preventive Resin Restoration

A common characteristic of permanent molars are the deep grooves and pits that are associated with the biting surface. These grooves and pits are deep and narrow, which prevents the bristles of the toothbrush from reaching into the crevices.

Deep grooves and pits on the chewing surfaces are nearly impossible to clean, even with diligent brushing. Historically, these areas were left to decay until a large filling was required—a process that permanently compromises the tooth's structural integrity.

Today’s approach focuses on Preventive Resin Restorations (PRR), a quick, painless procedure designed to stop decay before it starts. By sealing these surfaces, we can virtually eliminate the need for traditional fillings, dramatically increasing the health and longevity of your permanent molars.

Procedure

The PRR procedure begins by thoroughly cleaning the tooth's chewing surface. Using a fine microscopic burr, any existing decay within the pits and fissures is gently removed. A plastic resin material is then bonded into these grooves and hardened instantly with a specialized ultraviolet light. Because we utilize nitrous oxide, the process is entirely painless and requires no local anesthesia or shots. Since the material sets immediately, patients are free to eat and drink as soon as the appointment is finished.

PRR or Sealants?

While PRRs and sealants both protect the chewing surfaces of teeth, they differ significantly in their preparation and longevity. Traditional sealants are applied over the tooth's grooves without first removing debris or softened enamel, which can lead to a weaker bond and a shorter lifespan. In contrast, a PRR involves precisely cleaning the pits and fissures to ensure a superior, long-lasting bond. Because PRRs offer enhanced durability and more effective long-term protection against decay, Dr. Ching performs PRRs exclusively to ensure the best possible outcome for your dental health.

With current clinical methods, PRRs typically last between 5 to 10 years. To ensure their continued effectiveness, Dr. Ching personally inspects each PRR during your six-month examinations. In the event they are damaged or missing, Dr. Ching will replace them at no additional charge. However, please keep in mind that this procedure specifically protects the chewing surfaces; because cavities can still develop between the teeth, daily brushing and flossing remain essential for complete oral health.
